Menopause as a sign of old age: Most women see menopause as a sign of ageing, being out of contest and saying goodbye to beauty age. It brings a woman face to face with the reality of ageing.
More concerns may arise from the agility of the husand at the time of menopause. Since the duration of man's sexual strength is twice that of he woman, some women at menopause develop the fear of losing their husbands to the ever-ready, desperate but exotic ladies on the street. Realizing these may precipitate variety of fears associated with menopause. These include:
- Fear of death,
- Fear of Dependence on children
- Fear of Loneliness and Helplessness
- Fearof Failure of physical and financial resources
- Fear of Loss of husband's attention.
All these thoughts, in addition to the physical signs on them lead to:
- Depression
- Insomnia - inability to sleep well
- Irritability - hostility
- Headache
- Palpitation
- Generalized body pains
Marital Problems: The period of climacteric (menopause), if poorly managed, may give rise to marital problems in the family. The problems usually arise from the woman's attitude and feeling towards the husband.
Furthermore, no responsible man who loves his wife feels comfortable or maintains erection when his wife is complaining of pains during intercourse. It is only in rape that the woman's feelings are ignored. Due to psychological symptoms and vaginal dryness, some women become so irritable towards their husbands, an action that may push a man to extra-marital affairs and its attendant consequences in the marriage.
